This laboratory is part of the Center of Human and Clinical Genetics at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Leiden, The Netherlands. He was appointed full professor at the LUMC in 2000. One of his main lines of research involves de novo mutations and germ line mosaicism. Since 1989 Bakker is in charge of the molecular genetic diagnostic laboratory in Leiden. Since 1998 the molecular diagnostic laboratory was accredited according ISO17025, the Cytogenetics laboratory in 2001 also complied with this standard. As of 2005 the molecular genetics lab, the cytogenetics lab and the lab for Hemoglobinopathies merged into the LDGA and was accredited according the new quality standard for medical laboratories ISO 15189. Bakker is involved in the NoE Eurogentest as one of the leaders of unit 5 New and Emerging technologies.
